Why a coupon code does not work, and what to try next
CouponChops · · 1 min read
Most failures have one of five causes.
- codes
- basics
You paste a code at checkout and nothing happens. It is rarely a mystery. Work through these causes in order.
The five usual causes
- The offer has ended. Stores can end a promotion early
- The items are excluded. Sale items, gift cards and some brands are often left out
- You are below the minimum spend. Check whether the code needs a certain total
- It is for new customers only. A first-order code will not work on a second order
- It was typed wrong. Codes are exact: copy and paste rather than type
What to try next
- Read the terms shown with the offer on the store's page
- Remove one item at a time to find the excluded product
- Sign in: some codes are tied to an account or a membership
- Look for the same saving without a code, such as a member perk or a sale price
Offers that do not need a code
Many savings are applied automatically once you are signed in or have joined a free program. They cannot be mistyped and they do not expire next week. See which stores offer them on the coupons page.
A note on how we list offers
We list public offers as the stores describe them, and we do not mark an offer as verified unless it has been checked. If something has changed, the store's own page is the final word.
